The Himalaya, close to home.
I’ll be straight with you: Langtang is the one major region on this site I haven’t trekked myself yet. It’s high on my list. But it comes up often enough from travelers I trust, for good reasons, that it belongs here.
The Langtang Valley trek heads north from Kathmandu into a glacier-carved valley framed by 7,000 m peaks. You climb through rhododendron forest and Tamang and Tibetan-influenced villages up to Kyanjin Gompa (about 3,870 m), with the option to push higher up Kyanjin Ri or Tserko Ri for big mountain views. It’s a shorter, lower trek than the Everest and Annapurna classics. And it’s the closest major trekking region to Kathmandu, with no flight required.
Moderate. The daily distances and altitude are gentler than Everest or Annapurna, so it’s friendly to first-timers and anyone short on time who still wants the real high-Himalaya experience. The optional viewpoint climbs above 4,500 m give fitter trekkers something to push for without committing to a three-week expedition.
There’s a human story here that sets Langtang apart. The valley was hit hard by the 2015 earthquake, and the way the community has rebuilt is, by every account I’ve heard, genuinely moving. Trekking here puts your money straight into local teahouses and guesthouses that need it. The walking is beautiful and varied: forest, yak pastures, and a wide glaciated valley with Langtang Lirung towering over it. It’s the trek I most want to do next, precisely because it pairs real mountains with a reason to go beyond the view.
