Annapurna Circuit

The whole sweep of Nepal in one route, from rice paddies to a 5,400 m pass

Once the longest classic teahouse trek in Nepal, the Annapurna Circuit is still the one I’d put on the shortlist for anyone who wants to watch the country transform under their boots. I’ve done the full Circuit, Thorung La and all, and no other trek I’ve walked changes so completely from start to finish. From subtropical river valleys to a wind-scoured 5,400 m pass and down into the high desert beyond.

What this trek is

The Annapurna Circuit loops around the entire Annapurna massif, traditionally over 14 to 18 days, crossing the Thorung La pass at 5,416 m as its high point. The route passes through dramatically varied landscapes and a wide range of ethnic communities, which is what sets it apart from the out-and-back base camp treks. You’re constantly moving into new terrain and new cultures rather than retracing your steps. Road-building has shortened parts of it over the years, but a well-planned itinerary still delivers the classic Circuit experience.

Who it’s for

This is a longer, more committing trek than Annapurna Base Camp, and the Thorung La is a serious high-altitude day, so it suits trekkers who want range and don’t mind two-plus weeks on the trail. You don’t need technical skills, but you do need good fitness, patience for the altitude, and an itinerary built with proper acclimatization before the pass. It’s a fantastic “second big trek” or a bucket-list first one if you have the time.

What you’ll see

The variety is the whole point. You start in green, terraced, subtropical valleys, climb through pine and then alpine country, and cross the Thorung La into the stark, Tibetan-influenced landscape of the Manang and Mustang side. Including the pilgrimage town of Muktinath. Crossing the pass itself is a cold, pre-dawn grind that pays off with one of the most earned views in the Himalaya. On my Circuit, the day-to-day shift from rice paddies to high desert was the thing I couldn’t stop talking about afterward.

Practical details

What it costs (in brief)

Longer than ABC but still good value for the days you get; see the Nepal trek cost guide, and the Everest vs Annapurna comparison if you’re weighing it against EBC.

The Circuit is one of my favorite treks in Nepal precisely because it’s so many treks in one. Tell me your timeline and fitness and I’ll help you plan a version that fits. And acclimatizes you properly before the Thorung La.
