Into the heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary.
If Everest is the icon, Annapurna Base Camp is the one I quietly recommend more often. I’ve trekked it with my daughter Callie, and it does something few treks anywhere can: it walks you straight into a natural amphitheater of Himalayan giants, for less money and less hassle than the Everest region.
ABC is a trek into the Annapurna Sanctuary, a high glacial basin ringed by peaks, ending at Annapurna Base Camp at about 4,130 m. There’s no flight into a remote airstrip. You start near Pokhara, which keeps the cost and logistics simpler. The walking climbs through terraced farmland, dense rhododendron forest, and Gurung villages before the valley narrows and the big mountains close in around you.
This is a moderate-to-challenging trek that suits reasonably fit first-timers as well as experienced trekkers. The top altitude is lower than Everest, which makes it more forgiving, but the daily climbs through the forest are real work. If you want genuine high-Himalaya scenery without the 5,500 m ceiling of the Everest region, this is the sweet spot. It’s a big enough reason I felt good bringing my daughter on it.
The Sanctuary itself is the draw. By the time you reach base camp you’re standing in a 360-degree ring of peaks. Annapurna I (8,091 m), Machhapuchhre (the sacred “fishtail”), Hiunchuli. Close enough to feel like they’re leaning over you. What makes it for me is the contrast on the way up: subtropical forest, waterfalls, and stone-stepped villages give way to moraine and ice over just a few days. Callie and I added the short Poon Hill sunrise as a warm-up, and it’s worth it. One of the most accessible great views in all of Nepal, and a perfect first big trek to share with someone.
