Nepal Trek Cost in 2026: What Americans Actually Pay

Thirdrock Adventures builds every package to match your specific itinerary, group size, and service level rather than publishing a fixed rate. That is actually a good thing. You are not paying for a one-size-fits-all package.

Based on Thirdrock’s own cost guidance, Everest Base Camp trek packages range from around USD $1,100 on the budget end up to USD $4,500 for premium service. For most North Americans who want a well-supported, safe experience with quality guides and proper acclimatization days built in, budget around $1,400 to $2,200 for a standard guided package.

A standard package from Thirdrock includes:

  • Airport transfers in Kathmandu
  • Hotel accommodation in Kathmandu before and after the trek
  • All teahouse accommodation and three meals daily on the trail
  • An experienced licensed guide
  • A porter (one porter per two trekkers)
  • All permits
  • Lukla flights for Everest region treks

Some agencies advertise the trek at very low prices but cut corners on guide quality, accommodation, and acclimatization days. Those shortcuts show up when you are at altitude and it matters most. Don’t make that trade.

On-Trail Spending Money

Even with a full package, you will spend some personal cash on trail. Budget around USD $20 to $30 per day for beverages, snacks, hot showers, device charging, and WiFi. For a 14-day EBC trek that works out to roughly $280 to $420.

International Flights: $900 to $1,400

From Minneapolis or Chicago, you are typically routing through Doha, Dubai, or Delhi. Round-trip runs $900 to $1,300 if you book three to six months out. Book early. Prices jump significantly in the final two months before peak season. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the most popular and most expensive windows for flights.

Permits: Included in Your Package

The EBC trek requires a Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and a Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit. Thirdrock handles all permits for you as part of the package. Confirm this is included when you get your quote. With a reputable operator it always should be.

Travel Insurance: $100 to $250

Non-negotiable. You need a policy that explicitly covers high-altitude trekking and helicopter evacuation. The highest point on a standard EBC trek is 5,550 meters at Kala Patthar, and your insurance needs to cover you to at least that elevation. A helicopter evacuation without coverage can cost $5,000 or more out of pocket.

Gear: $200 to $800

You don’t need to buy everything new, but you need the right things. Essentials include a down jacket rated for serious cold, broken-in boots with ankle support, trekking poles, a sleeping bag rated to at least minus 10 Celsius, and moisture-wicking base layers. Buying from scratch runs $600 to $800. If you already have most of it, $200 to $300 fills the gaps. Gear can also be rented cheaply in Kathmandu if you don’t want to invest in a full kit.

Tips for Your Guide and Porter: $150 to $250

Tipping is customary and meaningful. Many trekkers offer around 8 to 10 percent of the total tour price. On a $1,600 package, that works out to roughly $130 to $160. Have it ready in cash before you leave Kathmandu.

Kathmandu Spending Money: $150 to $300

Budget a couple of days in Kathmandu before and after the trek. Meals, taxis, temple entrance fees, and souvenirs are very affordable by American standards. A good sit-down meal with drinks runs $8 to $15.
